AU alumnus presents study at Korean Diabetes Association
Prayagraj: Allahabad University alumnus Prashant Kumar Rai presented his research paper at the Korean Diabetes Association (KDA) scientific meeting, held in Seoul, South Korea, which concluded on Friday.
Speaking on the phone from Seoul, Rai said that he discussed the glycemic attribute of Moringa oleifera fruits, commonly known as drumsticks. In the Indian traditional system of medicine, drumstick is generally used as a healing herb to treat diabetes. Therefore, the purpose of the study was to validate the antidiabetic property of Moringa oleifera fruits scientifically, to develop it as a complementary and alternative medicine for managing type 2 diabetes with minimal or no side effects.
The impact of various doses was studied, ranging from 100 mg to 400 mg/kg body weight. Lethal dose (LD 50) experiments were also carried out to check the margin of safety, he explained.
All the studies were carried out in vivo. The results revealed that the aqueous extract of Moringa oleifera fruits could be developed as a novel herbal medicine to treat diabetes with no side effects at all.
In addition to glycemic control, Prashant also studied the impact of this extract on haemoglobin, total protein, urine sugar, urine protein, body weight, and cholesterol levels.
With encouraging results in hand, he is planning to bring it to the market soon.
He is also invited by the American Diabetes Association (ADA) to present his paper at the 85th Scientific Sessions in Chicago, IL, from June 20–23, 2025, at the McCormick Place Convention Center.
In Seoul, members of the Korean Diabetes Organisation facilitated Rai for the yeoman service he has done in the field of diabetes control at the 14th International Congress of Diabetes and Metabolism (ICDM). He was also given a travel grant in USD as a mark of respect for the guests by the Korean Diabetes Organisation.
"Still, we have to go a long way to eradicate diabetes from the country," said Rai, who did his PhD under the supervision of the former head of the department of chemistry, Prof Geeta Watal. At present, he is working on reversing diabetes.
